SPSFAQ010230 - What are the integration differences between SPS 2003 and the various Office versions? - 0 Comments - stephencummins - Thu, Aug 21st, 2003 - General
SPS webpage can detect you have installed the Office 2003 and run local dll to implement some SPS function, e.g. mutil-file upload only works when you have office 2003 installed.

Integration with Office XP is gone.

You will get guys telling you that you can integrate with SPSv2 if you install a backwards compatible document library - but that’s really just putting a bit of SPS 2001 on the server.

Believe me, check-in, check-out, which are themselves very basic, are not available from inside Office XP, or even from the context menu in Windows Explorer.

The ONLY option you have is to use the web interface to check-in or check-out.

SPSFAQ010229 - Why do people need use SharePoint Portal Server V2 while Windows SharePoint Service has all the functionality? - 0 Comments - stephencummins - Mon, Apr 7th, 2003 - General
SharePoint Portal server adds the following functionality:

Search
Single Signon
Windows SharePoint Services aggregation and management (sites Directory)
Categorization
Scalailability
Compatibility with SPS 1
Enterprise Integration with SAP, Great Plains (and other I can't remember off hand)
Enterprise connectivity web parts (exchange connection web parts, etc) The ability to index content sources (content that is not stored on the
SharePoint Server)

My Site feature which has 2 views so a person can have access to personal information on their site, but other users can only see public information
about that user.

SPSFAQ010228 - What are the new features of SPSv2? - 0 Comments - stephencummins - Mon, Mar 24th, 2003 - General
When people first start working with SharePoint v2 a common reaction is: I can't figure out the difference between SPS and STS anymore. At the recent MVP summit in Redmond we actually got to ask this question to the SharePoint product team. Rest assured, that's the way it's meant to be they told us. They made a lot of effort to make sure STS and SPS very much look alike in v2. Of course, there are still differences. You should see SPS as the umbrella under which various team sites fall. For the convenience we've listed the extra features in SPS:

Hierarchical navigation and category services
Publishing and Alerts
Search
Line of business integration and single sign on (SSO)
Profiling system
MySite
Site registry

We won't explain the features at this point, this is for a later time. Hope this helps!
